The Footprints

Art and architecture are
symbols of our progress, the
growth of our minds, they
inhabit their own lives and
space, testifying for our
hearts and minds silently
to those who go before - we
leave them lying around, in
corners and in streets so
the ones who follow us
can see what we saw
can see with our eyes
an age they did not know
a time they have not seen -
for understanding
of our own time
is not even
clearly given - it is
a piecing of fragments,
a tiling of mosaics -
our art and architecture
grow despite us - they
are our footprints
in God's sands
we leave behind us
for those who go before
to know
what they were for
and what they
showed of us
whilst we were here -
our character.
