The Trail is Cold

it was old
before it was begun
doomed to falter
and fail
from day one
you too raw
untried, too light
to realise what is
real in this world
and I too blinded
by your beauty and
raw power, could
not see inside your head
to that cold
core where all that
really mattered
was already there
when I woke
you were long gone
the trail cold
as if you'd never been
and I am still
wondering
at my slight, my green
trust undone
