The Carborundum Stone

you sharpened your life on it -
focus of eyes and hands -
sweat invested in the moment of purpose,
power,

and I watched you - small eyes,
insignificant, in awe
of your strong arms, ability
in action, invention

small girl, uncertain, I saw
your world of chisels, screwdrivers,
drills, and work the next project
of bend and body

but it was all so confusing -
the dynamic of people
who loved yet clashed -
you liked to build, perfect

maintain, correct,
make perfect better, metal
tools clean and sharp
neat rows, ready for use
