The Gift

I wish there was someone
to chip these blocks
to break these bands of steel.

There is light inside, I know it
but I am blind to myself
and the tools in my hands

are made for other things.
Somewhere, the songbird sings
and preens its feathers,

somewhere a rainbow blooms
and where the colours touch
a foot is healed,

a heart made strong
and pain is gone.

I wish someone would
unseal this room
would tell me how to come

out from under the stone
and walk
and breathe

like the day I was born.
