Suspense and Promise

The trees are thinking the air
is still, tiny movements
touch their branches -
cool air brings moisture
and a watery sun
brightens; the squirrels
are thinking, they pause,
eyes gleaming, clasping rosy
hands across their fluffy white
chests and wait to see ...;
the plants are thinking
as they push tiny shoots green
above ground
and peep about them;
the haar clings softly to
the hill, making us pale.
Suspense and promise
is the day, as if it waits
for an unknown signal
to burst into life and
movement.
