Night Rising

the evening dark and silent,
cool, flashing lights green
and red cross the sky in
silence, white trails behind
then the noise catches up -
such speed

way off west over the mountain
the sun has gone in green,
lemon, palest blue, with
calm cloud hanging at the rim

the river is quiet, nothing
stirs, the call of an owl
strikes into the silence
then nothing, silence

the land exhales its day
in herbs and pine, new
mown grass, a green
dark scent hanging in the air
the first stars appear
