work

a good day for the garden -
cool air and some sun, dry -
I fetched and carried, put
winter debris in the bin

all day I worked there
while you were in
I thought often of her
and how she is not here -

my heart is not enough
to contain the loss - too
many words unsaid, too
much unshared

at last I went in
when the cold came down -
good quiet day of body
and trying - maybe

I won't be long here now
and the gates stand open
to receive me
and my life-worked hands
