the vaults

tonight is such a warm
summer night out there,
light breezes, yet the stars
are winter stars

I stared straight into the heavy
golden eye of Mars
that stared steadily back

the Milky Way ribboned
over me like twists of
gauze and I saw bright
car headlights through the
trees coming down the hill

I wished it was you
I spoke to my mother
and father, alive still
out there somewhere
and the echoing
emptiness of the vast
spaces above me
echoed in the vaults my heart
