perfect shores

It was warm today, the sun
was here, with the wind,
its twin

on my own I wrote
words of books I read
that could have been better
but have not
written my own

I thought of my
mother today
and her home, our dog
and our cat - all gone

to the horizon
it is flat, unmarred
by anything I can see
all I have known, packed
with me: boxes and bats

the water is all around
the boat, and my sails fill

with the promise of
perfect shores
