dark comes early

the dark comes early, at
four o'clock, when the
birds go quiet, disappear,
and the dark trees drip
into still air

darkness comes early in
the cold months, solidifying
the heart, cooling blood
leaving no inclination
to sally forth; it is
easy to brood

darkness is early this
December, replete
with all I can and
cannot recall - all the
merry days lost
in a pall of cloud
frost-covered tinsel
a white shroud
