The Sea Knows

The sea knows its own
depths - the surface
glitters and
pouts at the sun but
its deepnessess
are darker than
anyone knows, deeper
than anyone can go
but it plumbs itself
well, knows every outcrop
each rock formation, each
grain of dissolved salt it
buoys - it is its
own greatest prize, its
own height and depth
its own arms
and it sways, singing,
oceanic in its
memories, its waters and
mountains, drifts of
green, whaling days and
dolphins keening -
ancient of days is
the sea, liquid fit
and feisty.
