Responsibility

I am worth a lot more
than the blitheness of your smile
and the careless manner
of your thought.
I am not a doll
to be labelled and boxed
as your present,
observed benignly
for your pleasure.

You can pat my head
feign concern
pledge your love
hold me close in bed
but you have a lot yet to learn
before you can find the ruler
by which you might
be able to measure me.
