Reaching Land

Climate activists are on the M25
and another Minister is elbow-deep
in sleaze: TV reality shows; breach
of Ministerial Code; bullying; all-round
corruption and the pocketing of coin.

It is raining today and the day is dark -
quiet in the house, my cupboard
doors wide open: I am painting walls,
varnishing wood, my book shelves
are next.

Down South of the border in the
Peak District I have a Nephew
who has turned eighteen. I have
spoken to him a handful of times
since he was born.

And down beneath the ground
the ones I love are feeding nature:
blown as dust in the wind
or absorbed by roots of trees.

How the breath brings us low
and we still fail at being human
even after all this time since
crawling out the sea.
