Fairacres

So quiet the road
so still and warm the air
all the golden lights
in the houses, and the silent
rows of cars.

Somewhere I hear traffic
on a busier road, but
the river is near, slow-
moving and green.

Little gardens all along
the street bounded by
neat brick walls, red
with black coping stones.

It is peaceful here,
this residential street
in a famous city
where we spent a few
fleet days watching
the rowers on the river.
