Don't Know

the secret of this life - I don't know
to hide pain from yourself, make it go
exorcise memory from skin, mind, eye
stop an ache a long mile high
want to have what's no longer there
cope with a choking, unreasonable despair
let in doubt, darkness, fear
then not really care about much anymore
leave something precious, then part of you dies
live cold, hard, facts by grasping at lies
try and try, but the path isn't clear
listen to sense that you don't want to hear
bemused, uncertain of which way to turn
all you know is, you don't want to be alone
